[이스턴] 원래는 사손족의 여신인 에오스트레(Eostre)를 가리키는 사손족의 단어로, 유월절 무렵에 이 여신을 기리기 위해 제사를 드렸다. 따라서 이 이름은 유월절 때에 일어난 그리스도의 부활 축제를 지칭하는 데 사용되게 되었다. 초기 영어 번역본들에서 이 단어는 헬라어 파스카(유월절)의 번역어로 자주 사용되었다. 흠정역(1611)이 편찬될 때, 이 단어 파스카가 등장하는 모든 구절에서 “유월절”이라는 단어가 사용되었으나 행 12:4는 예외였다. 개정역에서는 항상 올바른 단어인 “유월절”이 사용된다. [Easton] Originally a Saxon word (Eostre), denoting a goddess of the Saxons, in honour of whom sacrifices were offered about the time of the Passover. Hence the name came to be given to the festival of the Resurrection of Christ, which occured at the time of the Passover. In the early English versions this word was frequently used as the translation of the Greek pascha (the Passover). When the Authorized Version (1611) was formed, the word “passover” was used in all passages in which this word pascha occurred, except in Act 12:4. In the Revised Version the proper word, “passover,” is always used. [Smith] (Acts 12:4) In the earlier English versions Easter has been frequently used as the translation of pascha (passover). In the Authorized Version Passover was substituted in all passages but this; and in the new Revision Passover is used here. [Passover]
