[이스턴] 히브리어 ramoth는 “높은 곳”을 의미하며, 즉 “고가의” 또는 귀중한 것들을 뜻하거나, 일부 학자들은 나무처럼 “높게 자라는 것”이라고 추측한다 (욥 28:18; 겔 27:16). 랍비들에 따르면 이는 장식품으로 사용되던 붉은 산호이다. 산호는 미세한 다공동물이 자신이 사는 세포 안에 석회질 물질을 퇴적시켜 만든 석회질 해양 산물이다. 산호는 자라면서 무수히 많은 모양을 띠지만 일반적으로 나무처럼 가지가 갈라진 형태를 띤다. 홍해에는 거대한 산호초와 산호섬이 풍부하게 분포하며, 히브리인들이 아마도 이곳에서 산호에 대한 지식을 얻었을 것이다. 산호는 흰색, 검은색, 붉은색 등 다양한 색깔로 발견된다. 그중 붉은색이 가장 귀중하게 여겨져 위에서 언급한 바와 같이 장식품으로 사용되었다. [Easton] Heb. ramoth, meaning “heights;” i.e., “high-priced” or valuable things, or, as some suppose, “that which grows high,” like a tree (Job 28:18; Ezek. 27:16), according to the Rabbins, red coral, which was in use for ornaments. The coral is a cretaceous marine product, the deposit by minute polypous animals of calcareous matter in cells in which the animal lives. It is of numberless shapes as it grows, but usually is branched like a tree. Great coral reefs and coral islands abound in the Red Sea, whence probably the Hebrews derived their knowledge of it. It is found of different colours, white, black, and red. The red, being esteemed the most precious, was used, as noticed above, for ornamental purposes. [Smith] (Ezekiel 27:16) A production of the sea, formed by minute animals called zoophytes. It is their shell or house. It takes various forms, as of trees, shrubs, hemispheres. The principal colors are red and white. It was used for beads and ornaments. With regard to the estimation in which coral was held by the Jews and other Orientals, it must be remembered that coral varies in price with us.
