[더오그래픽] 예루살렘의 원주민인 여부스인의 이름으로, 멸망할 운명에 처한 일곱 민족 중 하나로 자주 언급된다 (창 10:16; 15:21; 출 3:8,17; 13:5 등). 이스라엘 백성이 팔레스타인에 도착했을 때 그들은 아도니제덱의 통치를 받고 있었다 (수 10:1,23). 그들은 여호수아에게 패배하여 그들의 왕이 죽임을 당했으나, 다윗의 시대가 될 때까지 여부스에서 완전히 쫓겨나지 않았다. 다윗은 헤브론 대신 그곳을 자신의 왕국의 수도로 삼았다. 나중에 성전이 지어질 터전은 여부스인 아라우나의 소유였는데, 다윗은 그것을 무상으로 받기를 거절하고 사들였다 (삼하 24:16-25; 대상 21:24,25).

[Theographic] The name of the original inhabitants of Jebus, mentioned frequently among the seven nations doomed to destruction (Gen. 10:16; 15:21; Ex. 3:8, 17; 13:5, etc.). At the time of the arrival of the Israelites in Palestine they were ruled by Adonizedek (Josh. 10:1, 23). They were defeated by Joshua, and their king was slain; but they were not entirely driven out of Jebus till the time of David, who made it the capital of his kingdom instead of Hebron. The site on which the temple was afterwards built belonged to Araunah, a Jebusite, from whom it was purchased by David, who refused to accept it as a free gift (2 Sam. 24:16-25; 1 Chr. 21:24, 25).
